‘Some of Gods Greatest Gifts
are Unanswered Prayers’ - by E. R. Harding,
12/96
Western song writer and singer, Garth Brooks, wrote a song named ‘Unanswered Prayers’. The lyrics to this song tell the story of a chance encounter with his old high school sweetheart while attending a Football game with his wife. All of the memories and feelings of his high school days return and he remembers his high school flame as an angel and everything he ever wanted in a companion. He recalls how he prayed to God every night, in high school, that he might give this lovely girl to him for the rest of his life. If only God would do this he would be eternally happy and never ask for anything else. As memories of the past fade and he looks again into the face of his old sweetheart as she is now. Her life obviously had not gone well and she is not the girl he remembered. In fact, he is not at all attracted to her now and as they talk he finds they have nothing in common. He then looks at his wife and sees the angel he had always wanted and realizes that life would not have been so good if God had answered his teenage prayers. He then realizes that ‘Some of Gods Greatest Gifts are Unanswered Prayers’. And acknowledges that God really knew what he was doing all along when his teenage prayers went unanswered. How true this is! Think of all of the ‘prayers
of the moment’ we have each sent heaven bound for the desire or need of
the time. I also thank God that he has not answered many of the prayers
I have uttered. They were important at the time, but, time proved
the need to be unimportant or even wrong for me! Every time I hear
this song it teaches me a beautiful lesson. ‘Happiness isn't
really getting what you want, it is wanting what you've got’. I pray
that we all might ponder our prayers and determine their worth before we
ask God to grant them.
